Feature Request: Keyboard Shortcut for changing tabs

Reported by Filipe Silva | December 25th, 2010 @ 07:38 AM

I tried to press 'common' keyboard shortcuts for changing tabs (ctrl+tab, cmd+alt+arrows, cmd+shift+arrows) but nothing changed the current tab. There is also no option in the menus for "Next tab" or "Previous tab" so I think there is no way to change tabs through the keyboard.

A keyboard shortcut for changing tabs is a necessity for any programmer, since reaching for the mouse/trackpad every time you need to change tabs is not practical.

There are already keyboard shortcuts for changing tabs. In the Window menu, there are Select Next Tab (Shift-Command-]) and Select Previous Tab (Shift-Command-[) items. Those default shortcuts also change tabs in Safari and Google Chrome.

However, you may be right that those other shortcuts should change tabs. You can use System Preferences > Keyboard > Keyboard Shortcuts to change the shortcut for any menu item, but you can’t assign more than one shortcut for an item that way. Maybe Kod should support all of the common shortcuts by default. If it does, however, Kod would have to make sure that it’s possible for users to assign something else to that shortcut (e.g. a custom macro “Move Text Left” for Command-Shift-Left) without triggering the tab change, too.

Oh, I didn't notice that shortcut... Mainly because I'm on a non-US keyboard and the brackets aren't so accessible, so I'm not used to that shortcut.

Sorry for creating a ticket without need.

Feel free to mark it as invalid.

    • Assigned user set to “rsms”

Having either ctrl+pageup/pagedown (like in Chrome) or cmd+alt+left/right (like in Textmate until recently) apart from the one with square brackets would be nice.

    • State changed from “new” to “invalid”
    • Tag set to shortcut

I'll close this ticket as invalid (thanks Rory).

However, I hear you regarding having multiple/secondary shortcuts. In the future, we will hopefully have a sophisticated-enough shortcut system which would allow multiple bindings to the same function.
