Feature: Enhanced columnar editing support
Reported by elliottcable | January 8th, 2011 @ 02:09 PM
Currently, you can column-select a lá Terminal.app.
Unfortunately, I can’t do anything with this, a lá TextMate; and that is probably TextMate’s single most useful feature (at least to me). I like my code and text to be very clearly aligned and clean-looking, and the ability to select, arrange, and modify code from the keyboard by columns is an absolutely essential feature in any editor. It’s the reason I could never fully leave TextMate for Coda, and then later why I couldn’t leave it for Espresso; I’m hoping to hell Kod won’t be another failure as a TextMate replacement for the lack of this same minor feature.
Basic wish list re: columnar editing:
- ability to select a range of text in any way, and then change that linear selection range to a columnar selection range (a lá the ⌥ key’s effect in TextMate)
- ability to type while a columnar selection is active, and replace the text in each line of the column
- ability to modify a columnar selection via the arrow keys while one is active
- ability to turn columns into ponies
- ability to copy and paste columnar selections in an intuitive way in all possible situations (linear section on clipboard and linear selection; linear section on clipboard and columnar selection, columnar section on clipboard and linear selection; columnar section on clipboard and columnar selection … not to mention the question of different sizes of selection with different sizes of section)
Forgive me if this ticket sounds too acerbic; it’s being typed on far too little sleep! D:
