Feature: Hide extra chrome

Reported by elliottcable | January 8th, 2011 @ 02:16 PM

I spend a lot of time editing in a lot of windows. Here’s how my TextMate is set up: http://d.pr/yjUL

As you can see, nearly all of the unnecessary chrome is hidden or disabled. No bars, no drawers, no gutter, nothing.

I’d love to see Kod have configuration options (or better yet, view-menu options a lá TextMate and Safari, that I can toggle with hotkeys) to hide and show:

  • location bar
  • tab bar (always show, or only show when multiple tabs)
  • sidebar (already present, just needs a hotkey)
  • status bar

Ideally, IMHO, the keyboard shortcuts would follow those of Safari (⌥⌘|, ⌘/, ⇧⌘T).

Hiding the tab bar could also be useful, if we extend the sidebar to display additional stuff (like a file history or workspaces, see http://groups.google.com/group/kod-app/browse_thread/thread/7c637d5.... I could even imagine making what tabs represent configurable (file system content, history, workspace, …)

To implement it, I would use something like the mode originally posted here: http://groups.google.com/group/kod-app/browse_thread/thread/62f42eb... The tabs would still exist in the background, but newly selected files would be opened in the current.

For the case if the requested content already is open in another tab I don't have a solution yet. Maybe we should just allow to disable tabs if there is only one open.

On the other side, Kods tab bar needs almost no additional space. And it is too deep embedded into the layout to just hide it without additional adjustments.

    • State changed from “new” to “open”
    • Tag changed from location bar, side bar, status bar, tab bar, ui to feature, ui, ux

We want these things in Kod. Open for hacking.

Have you guys used Espresso? I really like the displaying of “tabs” (as you currently have them) in the sidebar.

I’d love to see your application of “tabs” be replaced with a section of the sidebar for ‘active’ files, and then use the tab bar to collect multiple “projects” into a single window.

Mind you, such a “project” could easily have only a single file in it, so you can still use top tabs to display files if that’s the way you prefer to think.

In fact, it seems like the single best option to provide would be one that toggles whether the sidebar is coupled to a window or a tab. That is, whether individual tabs have their own sidebars; if that is enabled, then the sidebar would have such an active-files section at the top to provide “tabs” specific to that project.

Make sense? Seem as intuitive to you as it seems to me?
